Declare: to proclaim, to announce, to make known.
Two months ago I embarked alone on a 20+ hour road trip. That’s a long time to listen to your own thoughts; not only do you start to talk to yourself, but you start to argue when you answer! In a direct avoidance attempt, I went on a search for distraction and found a new podcast series to occupy my mind. The first episode hooked me. For 20 straight car hours, I listened to every single episode. Then I ran off on trails to “meet” the interviewed writers on other podcasts where they were featured.
I was intrigued by the women I met, fascinated by their unique stories. Most of all, I was inspired by the way they used their online voices to make a positive difference in their circle of influence. They each answered a call on their heart in very individual ways. Their stories confirmed a call my own heart has been hearing for a while: “If you are going to write, make it matter.”
Somewhere along the rabbit trail of podcast introductions, I heard about The Declare Conference. Immediately, my heart and mind seized on this event with a resounding “THIS!” So, in 3 weeks I will walk into my first ever writers’ conference, knowing no one but ready to explore the threads of a dream that has always seemed not only out of reach, but very much out of focus.
In order to make the most of our time together, the conference is hosting an online meet and greet and has asked us to answer a few questions about ourselves. Whether we’ve just met here today or we’ve known each other for years, here are a few things you didn’t know you wanted to know about me. 😉
1. If we were meeting in person, how would you introduce yourself?
I’m Wendy, it’s so nice to meet you! (Is this awkward yet??) I’ve been married to my pretty great guy over 24 years (wow, that’s really close to a quarter century! 😯 ). We have one almost-20-year-old daughter whom we have tried very hard (but very unsuccessfully) NOT to make the center of our universe. Despite that failure, we are now thriving pseudo empty nesters, experiencing the unparalleled joy of watching our little girl truly become an adult.
Currently we live in Maryland, and we have been in and out of the Nation’s Capitol region several times thanks to the US Air Force. I’m working hard to convince my husband that South Carolina would be a great place to retire and open a bed and breakfast — he’s all for the retirement option, but remains disconcertingly non-committal on the whole B&B prospect. (Psst! Should you desire to help me in this endeavor, feel free to leave a word of encouragement for him here! He actually does read this blog, so he’ll see them. 😉 )
2. What is your favorite thing to write and why?
I write about several topics on my blog, but my favorites are the posts that simply record whatever happens to be on my heart at the moment. The posts I have most enjoyed writing were the ones that caused tears to fall on the keyboard in the process — the day my heart hurt for my daughter, the day my heart hurt for me, and the day I realized how much my child had taught me were a few of those times.
3. What is your favorite thing to read and why?
Historical fiction, hands down! I love a good story, and I especially love a good story that teaches me a little about history at the same time. I don’t play favorites, though; I’ll read about books set in the years before the birth of Christ just as happily as ones occurring within the past few decades. That said, I often camp out around stories from the WWII era, so maybe I do play favorites just a little. 😉
4. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?
The answer to this one is likely to change on a daily basis, but today I would be exploring somewhere in Europe with my two peeps, visiting beautiful locations, eating amazing food, and wondering at this amazing gift we’ve been given: a bit history ensconced in so much lovely! But I wouldn’t want to stop in Europe — there’s a whole world I want to visit! May I please have more than 1 day??
5. What’s one thing you love about your blog and one thing you’d like to improve?
I love, love, love the relationships I’ve made through this blog! Some of the people I have never met, yet we’ve had an opportunity to form friendships. Some I’ve known for years but we have connected on a different level since I began writing. In this online space, there are few things that move me more than a note from someone after they’ve read something here.
The biggest change I would like to see in my blog is perhaps the most frightening change to make: I want to write from a much more vulnerable place. It is so much easier to write about things you should pack for a dorm room than to write about the raw emotion of facing an “empty” home for the first time. And it is much, much easier to create a pretty graphic with a Bible verse or inspirational quote than to write about what God is scripting on my heart, or why I don’t feel Him near, or the occasional hollow insignificance I try to fill with busyness. I want to learn to write “from where I am right now” instead of “from where I want to be,” or worse, waiting to write “until I have arrived.” Did I mention it was a bit frightening??
6. Now for the Lightening Round! Would you rather …
- Read on Kindle or paperback? All things being equal, a real, curl-the-pages-in-your-hands paperback any day!
- Drink coffee or tea? Nothing says “Hello, beautiful morning, what do you have for me today?” like a good cup of coffee!
- Go to a musical or a movie? Would it make me sound completely unfeminine and uncultured to say a good action or drama movie? However, I did thoroughly enjoy the one musical I saw in New York!
- Vacation at the beach or the mountains? Love the mountains, but the beach has my heart!
- Have an exciting night out or a relaxing night in? My impulse was to go with a relaxing night in, but I really do love a nice night out, too. It’s been a while since we’ve dressed up and stepped out, so I’ll go with that one!
- Watch sports, play sports, or no sports? If by “sports” you mean college football or Irish dance, I am a spectator all the way! If you mean anything else by “sports,” I claim ignorance!
Thanks for stopping by — it’s been great to meet you! If you want to know a little more about me and why I’m writing in this little corner of the online world, take a peek at My Story. See you at Declare!
See where I am sharing my stories and meet other bloggers sharing theirs!
If you enjoyed this post, you will love these!
