Today I was introduced to Five Minute Friday: five minutes of free writing on the word of the week — no editing, no overthinking, no worrying about silly things like grammar! This week’s word is “blessing,” the timer is ready, so on your mark, get set…
What does it mean to be blessed? Perhaps our real “blessing” is less what we have — relationships, possessions, security — and more how we feel about what we have. I emphatically believe my biggest blessing is the grace of Jesus redeeming my life. And of course my heart’s treasures are the pleasures He has given me in family, friends, and all good things. However, when I saw this week’s word prompt, blessing, my thoughts took a completely different direction.
I remember the first time I traveled from Virginia into Washington DC. Crossing the Potomac River on a commuter bus at 6:30 AM with the sun rising over my nation’s Capitol, I sat in stunned awe. I swore I would never tire of that view, or even that commute. Yeah, okay…about that commute. Suffice it to say that after almost thirty years, sometimes all I can see are too many people and too much traffic. My eyes, and my heart, refuse to see the wonderful opportunities all around me and long for a different view.
However, I want to see what I first saw from the window of that bus: not the beautiful sunrise or the impressive buildings, but the promise and the excitement, the blessing of being able to experience this adventure! Years have taught me that the “adventure” is actually just this thing called “life,” and it happens wherever I may be. If I live here for years to come or if God moves me to another locale, I want to fully realize that no matter where He places me, it is a blessing. Oh, my friend, I want to treat it as such.
I’m not good at this. I never have been. I love home, but my heart and mind wander with a longing for something different. I want to pack up my family and take off! What else is out there? What is the next adventure? Wouldn’t it be fun to live and and see and do all there is to live and see and do somewhere else?
Yes, it would be. And yes, I hope to experience it one day. Today, however, I am here.
This morning, this week, this month, I want to concentrate on where I am. I want to enjoy the blessing of being right here, right now. Next month, I want to do the same. And the month after that, and after that, and after that. Then one day — maybe, hopefully, prayerfully — I will truly understand how contentment is a blessing.
How would you define “blessing” today? Take a few minutes and share your thoughts in the comments below!Don't miss today's excitement while you are planning tomorrow's adventure! #fmfparty #blessing Click To Tweet
I have to admit I cheated just a bit on this first attempt at five minute free writing. I set my timer for five minutes and wrote like a fiend on this week’s word. Most of what you read above actually made it into a framework in those five minutes, however the misspellings, incomplete sentences, and frequently repeated words were horrific! I allowed myself another 25 minutes to clean it up (trust me, you really are glad I did that!).
I may have missed the whole point of the five minute exercise, yet two things came from it:
1. I actually wrote something! It’s been a while, and frankly, it feels good to hit “Publish” on something!
2. I was able to put into words a strong feeling that I have been unable to articulate: there is a real blessing in being content where you are, and I need to enjoy today’s gifts. We’ve had many visitors recently, and seeing things through someone else’s eyes always lends a fresh perspective. It has rekindled in me a strong desire to explore this area I call home. This week I took a few “field trips” with my camera and though I walked streets I’ve walked many times before, they looked new to me.
We’ve even been talking on my Facebook page and in my private Facebook group Prose & Pastime about fun, creative ways to get out and explore our local areas. You are welcome to join us as we challenge and encourage each other every week!
