Take just a moment and define the word “service.” Don’t look it up, just consider the first thing that comes to mind and decide what YOU think it means. Merriam-Webster defines “service” in many ways, and I’m guessing your definition is similar:
- the occupation or function of serving
- employment as a servant
the work performed by one that serves
useful labor that does not produce a tangible commodity.
- to be of help, use, or benefit
- contribution to the welfare of others.
Take a moment and look at “service” from a different angle, one that doesn’t necessarily involve a ton of extra work. Wedding vows include this word (“I promise to serve you…,” i.e., “put your needs first”); feeding your family a meal is an act of service (you serve dinner); doing your job well is a service (good customer service). Ooh, this is starting to sound a little better, a little more like a small gesture you would naturally make if you were thinking of another person.'Service' is a 4 letter word: L-O-V-E! And that, my friend, is what the Summer of Service Challenge 2015 is all about: leaving your mark on this summer with a weekly summer challenge! Holly from While I’m Waiting… started this challenge and is asking us to join her. I’m in! Read Holly’s beautiful explanation here. She will also explain how to join the fun on Instagram!
Each week will have a different focus, and Week 1 is “family.” Take a look at these simple suggestions for serving your family. Note that none of these ideas require a ton of extra work. Rather, each is focused on a little bit of intentional effort that loudly and clearly delivers the message, “You are special!”
“Why Not?” show a whole bunch of love and leave your mark on the summer of 2015 with the Summer of Service Challenge! Just imagine how your family and your community would be different if each person did one act of service (translate that to “one act of love” — because that’s what it’s all about, and loving sounds easier than serving 😉 ) each week.
What are you waiting for? The Summer of 2015 is waiting for you and me to make a difference — “Why Not?” make our little marks!
Please share with me how you will serve your family this week — your ideas and comments are always an inspiration!
