“You can’t always sit in your corner of the forest and wait for people to come to you…you have to go to them sometime.” ~~ Winnie the Pooh
Our kids are our priorities — our schedules become their schedules, their busy-ness becomes our busy-ness. And rightly so. That is how it should be, right? Well…while, I do not regret a single moment spent with or on my daughter, I do admit to too many postponed, even neglected, relationships.
How thankful I am for the understanding friend! The friend who says, “I know you’re busy. We’re all busy. But we will pick up where we left off as soon as we can.” (Thank you, Bethanne! 🙂 ) To borrow a phrase, “Bless!!”
You realize, as do I, the value of a real friendship. It is a blessing unlike any other — invaluable and irreplacable. Friendship gives us companionship and conversation. A place where we can receive praise and correction with equal appreciation. A catalyst to challenge us to be greater and a safe place to be ourselves.
My best laid plans notwithstanding, the busy in my life didn’t go away when my nest emptied, it just changed forms. It is still time, however, to start reinvesting in those precious friendships.
And so enters the informal “dinner club.” Three couples, three homes, every three or four weeks. We are all busy, but we are flexible and intentional. Before we leave one gathering, we set the date for the next one. As our last evening drew to a close, I was astonished to realize we had been eating and talking for 4 ½ hours! Such is the way of a comfortable friendship. And let’s not forget or underestimate the way of amazing food!
Oh, to be the cherished friend whom Robert Brault describes:
“I value the friend who for me finds time on his calendar, but I cherish the friend who for me does not consult his calendar.”
The calendar will always, out of necessity, be a factor, but I long to deepen my relationships, and even rekindle those I’ve neglected.
Do you have a friendship to nourish? Perhaps you are not able to commit to a regular gathering, but “Why Not?” make a date this week with that one person who keeps visiting your thoughts?
Don’t forget to come back and share the friendship love in the comments!
